Interview with Lareina
What motivated you to become a model?
When I was 21 I had a very unfortunate incident which left me in a wheelchair and unable to walk. I learned how to walk again after 6 months of therapy and lots of motivational self-talk but it was a full 2 years before I could run. It was the darkest period of my life and there were many days when I would just cry and scream. This experience made me realize how fragile my life can be and I began to regret not having photographs of myself to remind me that I really am here. I started out modeling to ‘collect memories’ of my life and discovered how wonderful it was to express myself through photographs. Modeling let me say all I wanted to say just by looking into the lens.
How long have you lived in Japan for?
I’ve been here 10 years now! I first came two weeks before my 17th birthday. Never thought I would end up staying so long so I’m really proud of myself for that.
What’s the biggest difference between Singapore and Japan?
The snacks lol. I don’t really like the snacks they have here, kinda bland tasting to me(even chocolate!). I’ve always been one who snacks so I often miss my salty savory and sweet Singapore snacks.
Tell us some of your favorite shooting locations.
Rooftops! I love high places and rooftops are a very interesting backdrop. Whether its cloudy or sunny, the sky always looks fantastic on a rooftop.
How do you prepare before a shoot, do you have a routine?
I don’t have a specific routine but I do make sure I have a proper breakfast and a lot of water the day of shooting so my energy levels are good.
What are your long term goals as a model?
I just want to keep on being happy with what I do.
What’s your favorite and least favorite food in the world?
Singapore cuisine is definitely my favorite. We really have awesome food. My least favorite is Tororo(Japanese grated yam). I only had it once and never had it ever again.
If you could have any non-traditional pet, which animal would you have?
A sheep! I once read that they actually make great pets and that they are as loving as dogs.
Is there anywhere in the world you dream of visiting? Why?
My childhood dream was to come to Japan and live here and I’ve managed to do that. I don’t think many people can say they fulfilled their childhood dream so I am very lucky.
If could solve one problem in the world, what would you choose?
I suppose I would want to choose something that is close to me and realistic. I would say, making the area I live in more barrier-free for the elderly and handicapped. I have needed walking aids before, I know how hard it is just to cross the road.
Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you?
I have a beautiful mixed breed dog named Axis that I adopted from a shelter. He was born with both front paws deformed giving him a slight limp when he walks. I earned my Dog Therapy license so I could be the best mommy possible to him. He really does make my world go round, hence the name Axis.
